Sheep Problem

Problem:

We both have sheep. If I give you 1 sheep we now have the same amount of sheep. If you give me 1 sheep, I now have twice as many sheep as you.

Solution:

I have 7 sheep and you have 5 sheep

How to solve it:

Using Algebra
X for Me
Y for You

If I give you 1 sheep then we both have the same amount of sheep
X – 1 = Y + 1

If you give me 1 sheep then I have twice as many sheep as you:
X + 1 = 2(Y – 1) = X + 1 = 2Y – 2

Solve for X on top equation:
X = y + 2

Plug X into second equation:
(Y + 2) + 1 = 2Y – 2
Y + 3 = 2Y – 2
Y = 5 Sheep

Now we know how many sheep you have. To find how many sheep I have, plug it back into the equation:
X = (5) + 2 = 7 Sheep
